About this engagement rate calculator
Engagement rate is the share of your audience that actually reacted to a post: (likes + comments + shares + saves) divided by followers (or by views, for a reach-based read), times 100. It is the number brands and media buyers check before a creator's follower count, because a large but unengaged audience converts worse than a small, active one.
'Good' engagement rate is platform-specific and shifts over time, so this tool compares your result against typical, not top-performer, ranges: short-form video platforms like TikTok run hottest because the algorithm rewards saves and shares, while link-unfriendly feed platforms like X and Facebook typically run lowest.
Use the views/reach denominator to judge a single post's performance regardless of how many of your followers actually saw it; use the followers denominator to judge how engaging your account is overall, which is the number most brand deals and media kits ask for.
| Platform | Typical range (engagements / followers) |
|---|---|
| TikTok | 3% to 9% |
| 1% to 3% | |
| YouTube (Shorts) | 1% to 5% |
| X (Twitter) | 0.5% to 1.5% |
| 2% to 5% | |
| 0.5% to 2% |
Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate engagement rate?
- Add likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by your follower count (or by views for a per-post read), then multiply by 100. For example, 445 engagements on a 10,000-follower account is a 4.45% engagement rate.
- What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
- Typically 1% to 3% of followers for an average post. Above 3% is a strong result; many accounts with large but disengaged followings sit well under 1%.
- What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?
- TikTok runs hotter than feed platforms, typically 3% to 9% of followers, because the For You algorithm favors saves, shares and completion over raw follower reach.
- Should I use followers or views as the denominator?
- Use followers for an account-level, brand-deal-style metric. Use views or reach to judge how well one specific post performed independent of how many followers the algorithm actually showed it to.
- Why does my engagement rate look low even with lots of likes?
- Engagement rate is relative to audience size, so a large following with proportionally fewer reactions always looks lower than a small, highly engaged one. Bought or inactive followers inflate the denominator without adding engagement, which is the most common cause of a surprisingly low number.
