About this subtitle shifter

Subtitles usually go out of sync for one of two reasons. Either they are consistently early or late, often because an intro was trimmed or added, which a fixed offset fixes. Or they start in sync and drift further apart over time, which means the subtitle was timed for a different frame rate and needs to be stretched.

Enter a positive offset to delay subtitles or a negative one to show them earlier. For drift, pick the frame rate the subtitles were made for and the frame rate of your video; the tool scales every timestamp by the ratio. Cues pushed before 00:00:00 are removed.

Tip: find one line near the start and one near the end, note how far off each is, and you will know immediately whether you need an offset (same gap) or a frame-rate fix (growing gap).

Frequently asked questions

How do I make subtitles appear earlier?
Use a negative offset. For example, -2 shows every line two seconds earlier. Lines that would start before zero are clamped or removed.
Why do my subtitles drift out of sync over time?
The subtitle was timed for a different frame rate, typically 23.976 vs 25 fps. Use the frame-rate correction to stretch the timings by the right ratio.
Can I shift subtitles in VLC instead?
VLC can delay subtitles during playback with the G and H keys, but it does not save the change. This tool writes a corrected file you can reuse anywhere.
Does it support VTT files?
Yes, both SRT and WebVTT are supported for input and output.
